My first pick and place machine

2023-08-19

Placing surface mount parts by hand is fine for one board and misery for twenty. Tweezers, a steady hand and a microscope only scale so far. At some point you need a machine.

The benchtop NeoDen on its shelf

This benchtop NeoDen is my first pick and place. It's small, it's not fast, and it places parts all day without complaining, which is the whole point.

More than the speed, it's what a first machine teaches you: setting up feeders, teaching the vision what each package looks like, and designing boards a machine can actually build. Those lessons scale to any bigger machine later.

First real job on it: a Beepberry, built specifically to learn the machine on something low stakes.
